We regularly say that we’re committed to diversity and inclusion, and that we want to see more women and people of colour on stage. We always aim to have a range of speakers and flag up the need to address these issues early in event planning with our clients.
However, it is fair to say that we haven’t done enough. Our network is predominantly white and, at a senior level, mainly male. This is reflected in the events we run and the audience we attract.
To improve this, we are going to run a free public speaking academy aimed at women, people of colour and other marginalised groups with an interest in speaking at business events. This will incorporate an initial onboarding call with Ilona, followed by four, 1.5 hour workshops with a small cohort. Topics will include overcoming nerves, structuring speeches, off the cuff responses, body language, stagecraft and storytelling.
We will look to create opportunities for graduates of the Academy to speak at Elevate events and for partner organisations. We have a broad programme of activity so welcome people from any sector.
The initial cohort will start on Friday 21 May (9am to 10.30am) and run each Friday for four weeks. You should ensure you are able to attend all four sessions before applying.
To apply for a place, please complete this short form by Monday 3 May.
