What does the GM Five Year Environment Plan mean for your business?

The Greater Manchester Environment Plan 2025-2030, launched at the GM Green Summit, outlines a roadmap for achieving a carbon-neutral and environmentally sustainable region by 2038.

It’s key aims and objectives include:

- Energy Transition: Develop a smart, flexible energy infrastructure, promoting renewable energy generation and increased energy efficiency in homes and buildings.

- Sustainable Buildings: Focus on retrofitting homes for energy efficiency and transitioning to low-carbon heating systems, such as heat pumps.

- Green Transport: Expand reliable, integrated, and affordable public transport while encouraging active travel and transitioning to zero-emission vehicles.

- Natural Environment: Enhance biodiversity and green spaces to benefit residents, wildlife, and the economy.

- Circular Economy: Reduce waste through recycling, reusing, and resource recovery.

- Climate Adaptation: Build resilience against climate risks such as flooding, heatwaves, and infrastructure challenges.

- Air Quality: Improve air quality to enhance public health and well-being.

- Sustainable Economy: Drive growth in green industries, creating jobs and supporting local supply chains.

The plan highlights the necessity of balancing environmental priorities with social equity, ensuring that vulnerable populations are not left behind in the transition, and aligns with GM’s overarching goal of fostering a "greener, fairer, and more prosperous" city-region.

Our panellists will unpick what these aims mean for businesses and the private sector can play in overcoming challenges and unlocking opportunities.

Speakers include: Mark Atherton - GMCA; Louise Blythe - BBC; Dr Silvia Tedesco - Centre for Sustainable Innovation (University of Salford).
